Integers & Decimals
Negatives, thousandths and rounding
What your child practices
Meeting negative numbers on a number line, comparing and ordering integers, decimals and fractions, working with thousandths, and rounding decimals.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: 6.9; 6.10; 6.12; 6.13 · signed numbers on the number line, absolute value, and comparing and ordering rational numbers
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Integers are whole numbers and their opposites: …, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, ….
- On a number line, numbers to the right are greater.
- To compare decimals, line up the places and compare from the left.
Example: Which is greater, −3 or −7? On a number line, −3 is to the right of −7. Numbers further right are greater. Answer: −3
