Biodiversity
Variety makes life strong
What your child practices
Why a variety of life makes species and communities more resilient, how species depend on each other, and why biodiversity matters to people.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: 7.8; 7.9 · biodiversity and the relationships among organisms in an ecosystem
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Biodiversity is the variety of life. It makes communities more resilient.
- A keystone species, like the beaver, is one many others depend on.
- In parasitism, one benefits and the other is harmed; in mutualism, both benefit.
Example: Bees get nectar and flowers get pollinated. What relationship is this? Both the bee and the flower gain. Both gaining is mutualism. Answer: mutualism
