7th grade · Science · Unit 3 of 16
Cells, Tissues & Organs
Single cells, specialized cells, diffusion and osmosis
What your child practices
Why cells are the basic unit of life, how plant and animal cells differ, how materials move into and out of cells, and how cells form tissues, organs and systems. Includes working out microscope magnification.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: 7.1; 7.4 · cells, tissues and organs, and how materials move into and out of cells
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- All living things are made of cells. Plant cells also have a cell wall and chloroplasts.
- Materials move into and out of cells through the cell membrane, from more crowded to less crowded areas.
- Cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form systems. Magnification = eyepiece × objective.
Example: A microscope has a 10× eyepiece and a 40× objective. What is the magnification? Multiply the two lenses. 10 × 40 = 400. Answer: 400×
Cells, Tissues & Organs in Alabama
In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 3 of 16 in 7th grade Science, after Cells & Life Processes and before Photosynthesis & Respiration.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
Which part of a plant cell captures light energy for making food?
- chloroplast
- nucleus
- cell wall
- vacuole
chloroplast
Hint: Chloroplasts contain the green chlorophyll that captures light energy.
Question 2
Put these levels of organization in order from smallest to largest.
- 🔬Cell
- 🧵Tissue
- 🫀Organ
- 🫁Organ system
Cell → Tissue → Organ → Organ system
Hint: Cells make tissues, tissues make organs, organs work in systems, and systems make up an organism.
Question 3
Which of these shows how living things are organized, from small to large?
- organ, cell, tissue, organism, organ system
- tissue, cell, organism, organ, organ system
- cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
- organism, organ system, cell, tissue, organ
cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
Hint: Cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form systems and systems form an organism.
Question 4
Osmosis is the movement of which material through a cell membrane?
- sugar
- salt
- water
- oxygen only
water
Hint: Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a membrane.
Question 5
How is a plant cell different from an animal cell?
- A plant cell has no membrane.
- A plant cell has a cell wall and chloroplasts.
- An animal cell has a cell wall.
- A plant cell has no nucleus.
A plant cell has a cell wall and chloroplasts.
Hint: Cell walls and chloroplasts are two structures that plants have and animals do not.
Question 6
What is the basic unit of life?
- the tissue
- the organ
- the atom
- the cell
the cell
Hint: All living things are made of one or more cells.
