Converting Units

Inches to feet, grams to kilograms

What your child practices

Converting between units in the US customary and metric systems (both ways, including decimals) and using conversions in multi-step problems.

Arizona Academic Standards learning standard: 5.MD.A.1 · converting between different-sized units within one measurement system and using conversions in multi-step problems

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Big unit to small unit: multiply. Small unit to big unit: divide.
  2. Know the facts: 12 in = 1 ft, 16 oz = 1 lb, 4 qt = 1 gal, 100 cm = 1 m, 1000 g = 1 kg.
  3. Change to the same unit before you add or subtract.

Example: A rope is 4 yards long. How many feet is that? 1 yard = 3 feet. 4 × 3 = 12. Answer: 12 feet
