Economies & Global Trade
Economic systems, supply and demand, and trade
What your child practices
Command, market and mixed economies, supply, demand and prices, and global trade: exports, imports, tariffs and trade agreements.
Arizona Academic Standards learning standard: 7.E5.1; 7.E3.2 · trade and trade barriers among nations, and how supply, demand and competition influence prices
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- In a command economy the government decides what to make; in a market economy buyers and sellers do; a mixed economy blends both.
- Exports are sold to other countries; imports are bought from them. A tariff is a tax on imports.
- Comparative advantage: make what you can produce at the lowest opportunity cost, then trade.
Example: In a command economy, who makes the main decisions about production? “Command” means orders from the top. The government gives those orders. Answer: the government
