Population & Migration

Growing cities and people on the move

What your child practices

Where people live and why: population growth, cities, push and pull factors of migration, refugees, and how moving people and cultures change places.

Arizona Academic Standards learning standard: 7.G4.3; 7.G3.4 · how population patterns change land use, and how population and movement can cause conflict or cooperation

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Demography is the study of human populations. Population density is how many people live in an area.
  2. Cities often grow along rivers and coasts for water and trade.
  3. Push factors drive people away; pull factors draw them. Newcomers keep culture alive with language and festivals.

Example: Why do cities often grow along rivers and coasts? People need water. Rivers and coasts are also routes for trade. Answer: They offer water and trade routes

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
