Our Land

Nature, buildings and caring

What your child practices

Natural and human-made features, how the land shapes how we live, and caring for it by reducing, reusing and recycling.

Maine Learning Results learning standard: Geography 2 · how the land, water and weather around a community affect the people who live there

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Natural things come from nature: trees, oceans, flowers.
  2. People make things like houses, roads and schools.
  3. We help nature when we recycle and pick up litter.

Example: Where should an empty plastic bottle go? Plastic bottles can be made into new things. So they go in the recycling bin. Answer: recycling bin

Our Land in Maine

In the Maine Learning Results, this is unit 2 of 10 in 1st grade Social Studies, after Maps and before My Community.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
