Pythagorean Theorem
Right triangles and a² + b² = c²
What your child practices
Finding a missing side of a right triangle, checking whether a triangle is a right triangle, and using the theorem for ladders and diagonals.
Maine Learning Results learning standard: 8.G.B.6; 8.G.B.7 · the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse in problems in context
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- It works for right triangles only.
- The two shorter sides (legs) are a and b. The longest side, across from the right angle, is c.
- a² + b² = c².
Example: A right triangle has legs 6 cm and 8 cm. How long is the longest side? 6² + 8² = 36 + 64 = 100. c = √100 = 10. Answer: 10 cm
Pythagorean Theorem in Maine
In the Maine Learning Results, this is unit 3 of 17 in 8th grade Math, after Patterns & Two-Step Equations and before Surface Area & Volume.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
A right triangle has legs of 8 cm and 6 cm. How long is the hypotenuse?
answer boxcm
10 cm
Hint: c² = a² + b² = 64 + 36 = 100, so c = √100 = 10 cm.
Question 2
The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 75 cm and one leg is 21 cm. How long is the other leg?
answer boxcm
72 cm
Hint: b² = c² − a² = 5625 − 441 = 5184, so b = √5184 = 72 cm.
Question 3
A triangle has sides 14 cm, 48 cm and 52 cm. Is it a right triangle?
- No
- Yes
No
Hint: Check whether 14² + 48² = 52²: 196 + 2304 = 2500, and 52² = 2704. They do not match.
Question 4
A ladder leans against a wall. Its foot is 72 m from the wall and it reaches 21 m up the wall. How long is the ladder?
answer boxm
75 m
Hint: The wall, ground and ladder make a right triangle. c² = 72² + 21² = 5625, so c = 75 m.
Question 5
A rectangular field is 9 m by 12 m. How long is the diagonal across the field?
answer boxm
15 m
Hint: The diagonal is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with legs 9 m and 12 m: √(81 + 144) = √225 = 15 m.
Question 6
The legs of a right triangle are 3 cm and 2 cm. What is the hypotenuse, rounded to 1 decimal place?
- 3.6 cm
- 2.2 cm
- 3.7 cm
- 5.0 cm
3.6 cm
Hint: c² = 3² + 2² = 13. √13 ≈ 3.6.
