Rearranging Formulas
Solve for any letter
What your child practices
Rearranging a formula to solve for one quantity (d = rt for t, P = 2l + 2w for l) and using it, plus justifying each step in solving an equation.
Maine Learning Results learning standard: HSA.CED.A.4; HSA.REI.A.1 · rearranging formulas and equations to highlight a quantity
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Treat the other letters like numbers.
- Undo each operation on the letter you want, in reverse order.
- Do the same thing to both sides.
Example: Solve d = rt for t. t is multiplied by r. Divide both sides by r. Answer: t = d/r
Rearranging Formulas in Maine
In the Maine Learning Results, this is unit 15 of 17 in 9th grade Math, after Factoring & Quadratics and before Two-Way Tables & Causation.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
Solve A = ½bh for h.
- h = 2A/b
- h = 2b/A
- h = A − ½b
- h = A/(2b)
h = 2A/b
Hint: Undo what is being done to h, one step at a time, doing the same to both sides.
Question 2
To solve 2x + 6 = 16, Maya first subtracts 6 from both sides. What equation comes next?
- 2x = 16
- 2x = 22
- 2x = 10
- x + 6 = 9
2x = 10
Hint: Whatever you do to one side, do to the other. Subtracting keeps the equation balanced.
Question 3
Use A = ½bh. A triangle has area 16 cm² and base 4 cm. What is its height?
- 8 cm
- 10 cm
- 4 cm
- 32 cm
8 cm
Hint: h = 2A/b = 32 ÷ 4.
Question 4
Solve d = rt for t.
- t = d − r
- t = d/r
- t = r/d
- t = dr
t = d/r
Hint: Undo what is being done to t, one step at a time, doing the same to both sides.
Question 5
To solve 4x + 2 = 22, Leo first subtracts 2 from both sides. What equation comes next?
- 4x = 20
- x + 2 = 22
- 4x = 22
- 4x = 24
4x = 20
Hint: Whatever you do to one side, do to the other. Subtracting keeps the equation balanced.
Question 6
Use d = rt. A car travels 135 miles at 45 miles per hour. How many hours does it take?
- 3 h
- 4 h
- 6075 h
- 42 h
3 h
Hint: t = d/r = 135 ÷ 45.
