Units
Unit 1
Numbers to 20
Counting, ordering and comparing numbers to 20, and seeing teen numbers as 1 ten and some ones.
Benchmark: 1.3.5.2 · reading, writing, comparing and representing whole numbers
Unit 2
Make 10
Finding pairs that make 10 (like 6 + 4) with ten frames, fingers and stories. Making 10 is a key strategy for adding.
Benchmark: 1.3.5.9; 1.3.5.8 · adding within 20 by making ten, and breaking numbers up to 10 into pairs
Unit 3
Adding
Adding to 20 with pictures, ten frames, number lines and short stories, using strategies like counting on, doubles and making 10.
Benchmark: 1.3.5.6; 1.3.5.9 · solving addition stories within 20 and adding within 20
Unit 4
Take Away
Subtracting within 20 by counting back and thinking addition, and solving short take-away and compare stories.
Benchmark: 1.3.5.6; 1.3.6.3 · solving subtraction stories within 20 and finding the unknown number in an equation
Unit 5
Equal or Not
Learning that = means "the same amount as" (not just "the answer is"), and using ≠ when two sides are different.
Benchmark: 1.3.6.2 · deciding whether addition and subtraction equations are true or false
Unit 6
Measuring
Measuring length with paper clips and cubes, comparing longer and shorter, heavier and lighter, and seeing why same-size units matter.
Benchmark: 1.2.3.1; 1.2.3.2 · ordering and comparing lengths and measuring with same-size units
Unit 7
Shapes
Naming and comparing 2D shapes by their sides and corners, and 3D objects by their faces and whether they roll or stack.
Benchmark: 1.2.4.1; 1.2.4.2 · describing the attributes of shapes and putting shapes together to make new shapes
Unit 8
Data & Graphs
Sorting by one attribute, reading picture graphs and bar graphs, and comparing groups.
Benchmark: 1.1.1.2 · collecting data and showing it with tally marks and bar graphs
Unit 9
Numbers to 100
Reading and building numbers to 100 with tens and ones, comparing them, and seeing that two names can mean the same amount.
Benchmark: 1.3.5.4; 1.3.6.1 · tens and ones in numbers to 120, and comparing two-digit numbers
Unit 10
Count It Up
Counting forward within 100, back from 20, by 2s to 20, and by 5s and 10s to 100, plus seeing small amounts at a glance (subitizing).
Benchmark: 1.3.5.3 · counting forward and backward from any number up to 120
Unit 11
One Half
One half means 1 of 2 equal parts. Children share items fairly between two people and see that two halves make a whole.
Benchmark: 1.3.5.12 · sharing a whole equally between two groups and naming halves
Unit 12
Coins & Cents
US coins: naming the penny, nickel, dime and quarter, knowing what each is worth, writing cents with the ¢ sign, and counting a mix of dimes and pennies up to 100¢.
Benchmark: 1.2.3.3 · naming pennies, nickels and dimes and finding the value of a group of them
Unit 13
Jump by Tens
Finding 10 more and 10 less than a number in their head, subtracting tens, and adding ones or tens to a two-digit number.
Benchmark: 1.3.5.7; 1.3.5.10 · adding within 100 with tens and ones, and using combinations of 10 to reach the next ten
Unit 14
Picture Graphs
Reading picture graphs with three groups: how many in each, how many more, how many in all, and which question a class survey can answer.
Benchmark: 1.1.1.2; 1.1.1.1 · showing data in a picture or bar graph and describing what it shows
