Shapes

Flat shapes and solid shapes

What your child practices

Naming and comparing 2D shapes by their sides and corners, and 3D objects by their faces and whether they roll or stack.

Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 1.2.4.1; 1.2.4.2 · describing the attributes of shapes and putting shapes together to make new shapes

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Flat shapes have sides and corners.
  2. Solid shapes can roll, stack or slide.
  3. A sphere rolls every way, like a ball.

Example: Which solid shape rolls every way, like a ball? A cube has flat sides, so it slides. Only a sphere rolls every way. Answer: A sphere
