Reading Smart

Predict, connect, and use text features.

What your child practices

Practices thinking before and while reading: using what you already know, predicting what happens next, making connections to your own life, using headings and pictures, telling kinds of texts apart and learning topic words.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: 1R7; 1R9 · predicting from covers and pictures, making connections and telling kinds of texts apart

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Before reading, think about what you know.
  2. A heading is a bold title above a part.
  3. Topic words, like seed, tell what the book is about.

Example: The word “seed” is a topic word. Which subject is it from? Seeds grow into plants. So it is about plants. Answer: plants
