Respond and Find Out
Respond to books with art and poems, and ask questions to find facts.
What your child practices
Your child chooses ways to respond to a story or poem (a drawing, a play, a new ending), asks questions, picks a source to answer them and thinks of ways to remember and share what they learn.
New York State Learning Standards learning standard: 1W4; 1W6; 1W7 · responding to texts, asking questions and gathering information from sources
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Share how a book made you feel.
- To learn something, first ask a question.
- Then find facts and share what you learned.
Example: Which question asks where? “Where do bats sleep?” or “Why do bats sleep?” “Where” asks about a place. The first one starts with “Where”. Answer: Where do bats sleep?
