New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-2.MD.1; NY-2.MD.3 · measuring and estimating lengths in centimeters and meters

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Centimeters (cm) measure short lengths.
  2. Meters (m) measure long lengths.
  3. Line up the 0 on the ruler with one end.

Example: Would you measure a pencil in cm or m? A pencil is short. Short things use centimeters. Answer: cm

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
