Multiply & Divide
Bigger numbers by one digit
What your child practices
Multiplying and dividing 2- and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers by splitting them by place value, plus remainders, estimating and word problems.
New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-4.NBT.5; NY-4.NBT.6 · multiplying by one digit and dividing with remainders
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Break the bigger number into tens and ones.
- Multiply each part.
- Add the parts back together.
Example: 3 × 24 = ? 24 is 20 + 4. 3 × 20 = 60 and 3 × 4 = 12. 60 + 12 = 72. Answer: 72

Question 1
What is 384 × 3?
384 × 3 = ?
answer box
1152
Hint: Split 384 into 300 + 80 + 4. Multiply each part by 3: 300 × 3 = 900, 80 × 3 = 240, 4 × 3 = 12. Then add the parts.
Question 2
What is 700 × 6?
700 × 6 = ?
- 420
- 42,000
- 4200
- 4900
4200
Hint: 7 × 6 = 42. So 7 hundreds × 6 = 42 hundreds, which is 4200.
Question 3
What is 36 ÷ 8?
36 ÷ 8
- 5 R4
- 4 R4
- 4 R5
- 3 R12
4 R4
Hint: 8 × 4 = 32, the closest you can get without going over 36. 36 − 32 = 4 left over, so the remainder is 4.
Question 4
What is 66 ÷ 3?
66 ÷ 3 = ?
answer box
22
Hint: Split 66 into parts that are easy to share by 3: 60 + 6. 60 ÷ 3 = 20 and 6 ÷ 3 = 2. Add the two answers.
Question 5
Which shows a way to find 3 × 71?
- 3 × 70 + 3 × 1
- 3 × 7 + 3 × 1
- 3 × 70 + 1
- 3 × 70 × 1
3 × 70 + 3 × 1
Hint: Split 71 into 70 + 1. Multiply both parts by 3: 3 × 70 = 210 and 3 × 1 = 3. Then add.
Question 6
56 paintbrushes are shared equally by 4 tables. How many paintbrushes does each table get?
🎨answer box
14
Hint: Divide 56 by 4. Split 56 into 40 + 16 and divide each part by 4.
