What your child practices

Multiplicative comparison: reading 35 = 5 × 7 as “35 is 5 times as many as 7”, and solving “times as many” problems, which are different from “more than” problems.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-4.OA.1; NY-4.OA.2 · multiplication as a comparison and solving times-as-many problems

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. “3 times as many” means multiply by 3.
  2. “3 more than” means add 3.
  3. If you know the bigger amount, divide to find the smaller one.

Example: Ana has 4 stickers. Jay has 3 times as many. How many does Jay have? 3 times as many as 4 is 3 × 4. Answer: 12
