What your child practices
Writing a fraction with 10 on the bottom as an equal fraction with 100 on the bottom (3/10 = 30/100), and using that to add tenths and hundredths.
New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-4.NF.5 · writing tenths as equivalent hundredths and adding fractions with denominators 10 and 100
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- One tenth is the same as ten hundredths: 1/10 = 10/100.
- To change tenths to hundredths, multiply the top and bottom by 10.
- To add tenths and hundredths, change the tenths to hundredths first.
Example: 3/10 + 25/100 = ? 3/10 = 30/100. 30/100 + 25/100 = 55/100. Answer: 55/100
