What your child practices

Matching capital (big) letters with their lowercase (small) partners, including look-alikes such as b, d, p and q.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: KRF1 · knowing the upper- and lowercase letters

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Every letter has a big letter and a small letter.
  2. Some partners look alike, like O and o.
  3. Some look different, like E and e. Look closely!

Example: Which small letter matches B? B is the big letter. Its small partner is b. Answer: b

Letter Partners in New York

In the New York State Learning Standards, this is unit 1 of 16 in Kindergarten English Language Arts, before First Sounds.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
