Care for Our Earth

Reduce, reuse, recycle and respect nature

What your child practices

Show how your family reuses and recycles. Spend time outside, and talk about taking only what you need and leaving nature as you found it.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: K-ESS3-3 · ways people can reduce their impact on the land, water, air and living things nearby

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Reuse things, like a jar, and recycle cans.
  2. Pick up litter and turn off the tap.
  3. Take only what you need from nature.

Example: Does dropping litter help or hurt nature? Litter makes the land dirty. That hurts nature. Answer: hurt

Care for Our Earth in New York

In the New York State Learning Standards, this is unit 4 of 9 in Kindergarten Science, after Weather & Seasons and before Sun & Shade.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
