Solid or Liquid?

Cold makes things freeze. Warm makes them melt.

What your child practices

Practices telling solids from liquids, and noticing that warming makes ice, snow, butter and chocolate melt into liquids while cooling makes water freeze into a solid.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: K-PS1-1 · matter can be a solid or a liquid, depending on how warm or cold it is

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A solid keeps its shape, like ice.
  2. A liquid flows and pours, like water.
  3. Warm makes things melt. Very cold makes water freeze.

Example: Ice sits in a warm room. What happens? Warm makes ice melt. It turns into water. Answer: it melts
