Fractions, Decimals & Percents

Convert, compare and use ratios

What your child practises

Moving between fractions, decimals (including repeating decimals) and percents, finding a percent of a number, and simplifying and scaling ratios.

Ontario Curriculum expectation: B1.7, B2.2 · fractions, decimals and percents

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practise.

  1. A fraction to a decimal: divide the top by the bottom.
  2. A decimal to a percent: multiply by 100.
  3. Percent means out of 100.

Example: Write 3/4 as a decimal and a percent. 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. 0.75 × 100 = 75%. Answer: 0.75 = 75%

Sample questions

A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.

  1. Question 1

Which decimal is equal to 8/9? (… means the digits keep repeating.)

    • 0.8
    • 0.8333…
    • 0.4545…
    • 0.888…
    Show answer

    0.888…

Hint: Divide 8 ÷ 9. The division never ends: the digit 8 repeats forever, so 8/9 = 0.888…. 0.8 stops too soon.

  2. Question 2

    What is 5% of 300?

    answer box

    Show answer

    15

    Hint: Change the percent to a decimal and multiply: 5% = 0.05, and 0.05 × 300 = 15.

  3. Question 3

A class has 7 girls and 35 boys. What is the ratio of girls to boys in simplest form?

    • 5:6
    • 1:5
    • 5:1
    • 1:6
    Show answer

    1:5

Hint: Write the ratio in order, girls first: 7:35. Divide both terms by 7, their greatest common factor: 1:5.

  4. Question 4

    Which is the least?

    • 7/20
    • 0.55
    • 45%
    • 25%
    Show answer

    25%

Hint: Change them all to the same form, like percents: 7/20 = 35%, 0.55 = 55%. The least is 25%.

  5. Question 5

Write 95% as a fraction. (Simplify it if you can.)

    95%

    answer box

    Show answer

    19/20

Hint: 95% means 95 out of 100, so it's 95/100. Divide the top and bottom by 5: 19/20.

  6. Question 6

    Write 4/5 as a decimal.

    answer box

    Show answer

    0.8

    Hint: Make the denominator a power of ten (10, 100, 1000…): 4/5 = 8/10 = 0.8. (Or divide 4 ÷ 5.)
