Oregon State Standards learning standard: 5.NBT.A.2; 5.NBT.B.5 · mental multiplication strategies and patterns when multiplying by powers of 10

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Use facts you know to find ones you do not: 6 × 8 is double 3 × 8.
  2. Break a number apart: 7 × 12 = 7 × 10 + 7 × 2.
  3. Doubling and halving can make a product easier.

Example: Use a trick: 9 × 7 = ? 9 × 7 is 10 × 7 minus one 7. 70 − 7 = 63. Answer: 63
