Numbers to a Million

Read, write and compare big numbers

What your child practices

Place value to 1,000,000: digit values, standard and expanded form, number words, rounding, ordering, and using benchmarks like 500,000 on a number line.

Oregon State Standards learning standard: 5.NBT.A.1 · place value in multi-digit numbers

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right.
  2. Read big numbers in groups of three digits: thousands, then ones.
  3. To compare, start at the left-most place and look for the first difference.

Example: Write four hundred twelve thousand, three hundred five in digits. Thousands group: 412. Ones group: 305. Put them together: 412,305. Answer: 412,305
