Focus areas

Units

  1. Unit 1

    Length, Area & Weight

Objects have properties we can measure: how long, how much flat space they cover (area) and how heavy they are. Children compare objects directly and see how bending, cutting, stretching and squishing change an object.

TEKS student expectation: 1.6(A) · comparing objects as larger or smaller and heavier or lighter

  2. Unit 2

    Objects & Structures

Structures that hold up a load, what everyday objects are for, how fasteners join things, and where materials such as wood and wool come from.

TEKS student expectation: 1.6(C) · objects as systems of parts, and the materials they are made from

  3. Unit 3

    Living Things

Sorting living and non-living things, telling plants from animals, and what living things need to grow.

TEKS student expectation: 1.12(A) · classifying living and nonliving things

  4. Unit 4

    Ideas from Nature

Practices how plants and animals use their outside parts to survive, and how people copy those parts to design solutions, like burrs and hook-and-loop straps.

TEKS student expectation: 1.13(A) · how animals' and plants' external structures help them live, move and meet their needs

  5. Unit 5

    Sky & Seasons

Day and night, the sun, moon and stars (the moon reflects sunlight), and the order of the seasons.

TEKS student expectation: 1.9 · the order of the seasons and the changes in nature through the year

  6. Unit 6

    How Things Move

Children describe how objects and animals move: the direction, the pathway (straight, curved, zigzag, circle) and the speed. They see that a push, a surface or a ramp changes the movement.

TEKS student expectation: 1.7(A); 1.7(B) · how pushes and pulls start, stop or change the speed or direction of motion

  7. Unit 7

    Parents & Babies

Practices how animal parents feed, protect and teach their young, and how young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.

TEKS student expectation: 1.13(C) · how young animals resemble their parents

  8. Unit 8

    Hot & Cold Changes

Practices how heating and cooling change materials, everyday uses of heat such as cooking and drying clothes, and which heat changes can be undone (melting butter) and which cannot (cooking an egg).

TEKS student expectation: 1.6(B); 1.8(A); 1.8(B) · changes from heating and cooling, uses of heat, and changes that can or cannot be undone

  9. Unit 9

    Soil & Water

Practices comparing topsoil, clay and sand, how water moves soil and rock, the differences between puddles, ponds, rivers, lakes and oceans (fresh or salt water), weather words, how living things use rocks, soil and water, and ways to save water and keep it clean.

TEKS student expectation: 1.10(A); 1.10(B); 1.10(C); 1.10(D); 1.11(A); 1.11(B); 1.11(C) · kinds of soil, water moving soil, bodies of water, weather, and using and saving water

  10. Unit 10

    Who Eats What?

Practices simple food chains (grass is eaten by a grasshopper, which is eaten by a bird) and how plants and animals in a terrarium or aquarium depend on water, light, air, soil and each other.

TEKS student expectation: 1.12(B); 1.12(C) · how living and nonliving things in a terrarium or aquarium depend on each other, and simple food chains

  11. Unit 11

Bird, Mammal & Fish Life Cycles

Practices the basic life cycles of a bird (egg, chick, adult), a mammal (born live, young drinks milk, adult) and a fish (egg, fry, adult).

TEKS student expectation: 1.13(B) · the basic life cycles of a bird, a mammal and a fish
