Hot & Cold Changes

Heat melts, cooks and dries. Some changes go back, some don't.

What your child practices

Practices how heating and cooling change materials, everyday uses of heat such as cooking and drying clothes, and which heat changes can be undone (melting butter) and which cannot (cooking an egg).

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 1.6(B); 1.8(A); 1.8(B) · changes from heating and cooling, uses of heat, and changes that can or cannot be undone

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Heat melts, cooks and dries things.
  2. Some changes go back: melted butter can get hard again.
  3. Some do not: a cooked egg can't go back.

Example: Can a cooked egg turn back to raw? Cooking changes the egg for good. Answer: no
