Human Body Systems
Breathing, blood, digestion and how the body responds
What your child practices
The main jobs of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, excretory and nervous systems, how they work together, and what affects healthy function, such as exercise and air quality.
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 7.13(A) · the main functions of human body systems
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Respiratory: lungs take in oxygen. Circulatory: heart and blood carry it. Digestive: breaks down food.
- Excretory: kidneys clean the blood. Nervous: brain and nerves send messages.
- Systems work together. Exercise and clean air keep them healthy.
Example: Where is most food digested and its nutrients absorbed? The stomach starts breaking food down. Most absorption happens in the next part. Answer: the small intestine
Human Body Systems in Texas
In the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), this is unit 10 of 18 in 7th grade Science, after Food Chains & Energy and before Heart, Bones & Muscles.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
Where does most digestion of food happen and nutrients get absorbed?
- the kidneys
- the small intestine
- the lungs
- the heart
the small intestine
Hint: The small intestine is long and folded to absorb nutrients into the blood.
Question 2
Why does your heart beat faster when you exercise?
- Your heart is trying to cool the air.
- Your muscles need more oxygen and nutrients delivered faster.
- Your lungs need to rest.
- Your blood needs to stop.
Your muscles need more oxygen and nutrients delivered faster.
Hint: The body responds to changing conditions by changing how fast it circulates blood.
Question 3
Put the path of food through the digestive system in order.
- 👄Mouth
- ⬇️Esophagus
- 🍽️Stomach
- 🌀Small intestine
Mouth → Esophagus → Stomach → Small intestine
Hint: Food is chewed in the mouth, travels down the esophagus, is mixed in the stomach, has nutrients absorbed in the small intestine and has water absorbed in the large intestine.
Question 4
Which body system does each organ belong to?
Sort into: 🫁 Respiratory · 🍽️ Digestive
- 🌬️trachea (windpipe)
- 💧large intestine
- 🫁lungs
- 🌀small intestine
- ⬇️esophagus
- 🍽️stomach
- ↕️diaphragm
- 🫧alveoli
🫁 Respiratory: trachea (windpipe), lungs, diaphragm, alveoli · 🍽️ Digestive: large intestine, small intestine, esophagus, stomach
Hint: The lungs and trachea help us breathe. The stomach and intestines digest food.
Question 5
A hand touches a hot pot and pulls away before the person feels pain. What is this quick response called?
- circulation
- digestion
- a reflex
- excretion
a reflex
Hint: A reflex is a fast, automatic response that protects the body.
Question 6
Where in the lungs does oxygen pass into the blood?
- the trachea
- the stomach
- the alveoli
- the esophagus
the alveoli
Hint: Alveoli are tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries.
