Our Solar System

Planets, moons and the asteroid belt

What your child practices

The planets in order, rocky versus giant planets, reading a table of planet data, moons, dwarf planets, comets and the asteroid belt.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 7.9(A) · the Sun, planets, moons and asteroid belt

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. The planets from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
  2. The first four are small rocky planets; the outer four are giant planets.
  3. The asteroid belt lies between Mars and Jupiter. Comets are icy and grow tails near the Sun.

Example: Is Mars a rocky planet or a giant planet? Mars is one of the first four planets. The inner four are rocky. Answer: rocky
