How we explain it

  1. Touch each thing once as you count.
  2. Say one number for each thing.
  3. The last number you say is how many.

Example: How many balloons? 🎈🎈🎈🎈 Touch and count: 1, 2, 3, 4. The last number is 4. Answer: 4

Count to 10 in Texas

In the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), this is unit 1 of 12 in Kindergarten Math, before Numbers to 20.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
