Coins & Cents

Name coins and count cents

What your child practices

US coins: naming the penny, nickel, dime and quarter, knowing what each is worth, writing cents with the ¢ sign, and counting a mix of dimes and pennies up to 100¢.

Alabama Course of Study content standard: 1.20 · naming pennies and dimes and knowing what each is worth

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A penny is 1¢, a nickel 5¢, a dime 10¢ and a quarter 25¢.
  2. Count dimes by tens: 10, 20, 30.
  3. Then count on 1 for each penny.

Example: How much are 3 dimes and 4 pennies? Dimes: 10, 20, 30. Pennies: 31, 32, 33, 34. Answer: 34¢
