Division
Sharing and grouping
What your child practices
Understanding division as sharing fairly and as making equal groups, and using multiplication facts to divide (3 × 4 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4).
Arizona Academic Standards learning standard: 3.OA.A.2; 3.OA.B.6; 3.OA.C.7 · division as sharing into equal groups and as an unknown factor, and dividing within 100
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Dividing shares things equally or makes equal groups.
- Think of the multiplication fact that goes with it.
- Ask: what times the divisor makes the number?
Example: 20 ÷ 4 = ? What times 4 makes 20? 4 × 5 = 20. Answer: 5
