Data & Scatter Plots
Quartiles, box plots and correlation
What your child practices
Finding the median and quartiles of a data set, reading a box plot, telling positive, negative and no correlation apart, and using a line of best fit to make predictions. Correlation does not prove one thing causes another.
Arizona Academic Standards learning standard: A1.S-ID.A.1; A1.S-ID.B.6; A1.S-ID.C.7 · box plots, scatter plots and the strength of an association
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- A box plot shows the minimum, Q1, median, Q3 and maximum.
- A scatter plot shows how two variables relate.
- A line of best fit follows the trend.
Example: Data: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. What is the median? Data is already in order. The middle value is 6. Answer: 6
Data & Scatter Plots in Arizona
In the Arizona Academic Standards, this is unit 9 of 17 in 9th grade Math, after Lines & Intersections and before Function Notation.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
As the outdoor temperature falls in winter, the heating bill tends to rise. What kind of correlation is this?
- A perfect correlation
- Positive correlation
- No correlation
- Negative correlation
Negative correlation
Hint: One variable rises while the other falls, so the points slope downward from left to right.
Question 2
Eight students recorded the minutes they read last night: 38, 32, 58, 48, 52, 60, 36, 42. What is the median?
answer box
45
Hint: Put the values in order. With 8 values, the median is the mean of the 4th and 5th: (42 + 48) ÷ 2 = 45.
Question 3
Eight students recorded the minutes they read last night: 36, 42, 54, 48, 50, 52, 66, 60. What is the first quartile, Q1?
answer box
45
Hint: Q1 is the median of the lower half (36, 42, 48, 50): (42 + 48) ÷ 2 = 45.
Question 4
As the number of hours of study goes up, test marks tend to go up too. What kind of correlation is this?
- No correlation
- Negative correlation
- A perfect fraction
- Positive correlation
Positive correlation
Hint: When both variables increase together, the scatter plot rises from left to right.
Question 5
A line of best fit for hours of practice (x) and score (y) is y = 4x + 25. What score does the model predict after 5 hours?
answer box
45
Hint: Substitute x = 5: y = 4 × 5 + 25 = 45.
Question 6
On a box plot, the median line is much closer to Q1 than to Q3. What does this tell you?
- The data between the median and Q3 is more spread out than the data between Q1 and the median
- The mean must equal the median
- The data between Q1 and the median is more spread out
- There are no values below the median
The data between the median and Q3 is more spread out than the data between Q1 and the median
Hint: A longer part of the box means those values are spread over a wider range.
