Multi-Step Equations

Brackets, fractions and both sides

What your child practices

Solving linear equations with brackets, fractions and variables on both sides, checking solutions, and turning word problems into equations.

Arizona Academic Standards learning standard: A1.A-REI.A.1; A1.A-REI.B.3 · solving multi-step linear equations and justifying each step

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Expand brackets first.
  2. Collect like terms.
  3. Then undo adding or subtracting, and finally multiplying or dividing.

Example: 2(x + 3) = 14 Expand: 2x + 6 = 14. Subtract 6: 2x = 8. Divide by 2: x = 4. Answer: x = 4

In the Arizona Academic Standards, this is unit 3 of 17 in 9th grade Math, after Polynomials and before Linear Relations.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
