Changes in My Life

Big events and putting them in order

What your child practices

Big life events (a new sibling, a move, starting school), how people's experiences are alike and different, and ordering events as a simple timeline.

Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 1.4.21.1; 1.4.18.1 · a timeline of my life, and what has changed or stayed the same

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Your life has big events, like learning to walk.
  2. Put events in order: what came first, next, last?
  3. Changes can feel big. Friends and family can help.

Example: Which came first: walking or crawling? Babies crawl before they can stand. Then they learn to walk. Answer: crawling

Changes in My Life in Minnesota

In the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards, this is unit 1 of 10 in 1st grade Social Studies, before School & Travel Long Ago.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
