My Community

Places, helpers and good choices

What your child practices

Community helpers and places, plus rights, rules, roles and responsibilities at home, at school and in the community.

Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 1.1.1.1; 1.3.15.1 · taking part in community life, and how people and goods move between communities

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A community is where people live, work and play.
  2. Helpers do jobs: a vet helps pets, a farmer grows food.
  3. Rules help us stay safe and be fair.

Example: Who helps sick pets get better? Pets go to an animal doctor. An animal doctor is called a vet. Answer: vet

My Community in Minnesota

In the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards, this is unit 3 of 10 in 1st grade Social Studies, after School & Travel Long Ago and before Respect & Inclusion.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
