Add & Subtract to 1000

Hundreds, tens and ones

What your child practices

Adding and subtracting three-digit numbers using place value, and adding or taking away 10 or 100 in their head.

Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 2.3.5.6; 2.3.5.3 · adding and subtracting within 1000, and finding 10 or 100 more or less

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Add the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones.
  2. Regroup 10 ones as a ten, or 10 tens as a hundred.
  3. 10 more or 100 more changes just one digit.

Example: What is 345 + 132? 300 + 100 = 400. 40 + 30 = 70. 5 + 2 = 7. 400 + 70 + 7 = 477. Answer: 477
