Sorting Polygons

Triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and octagons, regular and irregular.

What your child practices

Practices naming polygons by their number of sides and sorting them as regular (all sides and angles equal) or irregular.

Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 3.2.4.1 · naming polygons by their number of sides

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A polygon is a closed shape with straight sides.
  2. Triangle 3 sides, quadrilateral 4, pentagon 5, hexagon 6, octagon 8.
  3. A polygon has as many corners as sides.

Example: How many sides does a hexagon have? Hexa- means 6. A hexagon has 6 sides. Answer: 6
