Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 4.3.5.3; 4.3.5.9 · estimating and solving multi-step problems with multi-digit whole numbers

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Line up the digits by place value.
  2. Work from the ones to the thousands.
  3. Regroup when a place has more than 9.

Example: 4,582 + 2,749 = ? Ones: 2 + 9 = 11. Write 1, regroup 1. Tens: 8 + 4 + 1 = 13. Write 3, regroup 1. Hundreds: 5 + 7 + 1 = 13. Write 3, regroup 1. Thousands: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. Answer: 7,331
