Multiply & Divide
Bigger numbers by one digit
What your child practices
Multiplying and dividing 2- and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers by splitting them by place value, plus remainders, estimating and word problems.
Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 4.3.5.7; 4.3.5.8 · multiplying by one digit and dividing by one-digit divisors
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Break the bigger number into tens and ones.
- Multiply each part.
- Add the parts back together.
Example: 3 × 24 = ? 24 is 20 + 4. 3 × 20 = 60 and 3 × 4 = 12. 60 + 12 = 72. Answer: 72

Question 1
88 stickers are shared equally among 4 albums. How many stickers go in each album?
⭐answer box
22
Hint: Divide 88 by 4. Split 88 into 80 + 8 and divide each part by 4.
Question 2
What is 65 ÷ 5?
65 ÷ 5 = ?
answer box
13
Hint: Split 65 into parts that are easy to share by 5: 50 + 15. 50 ÷ 5 = 10 and 15 ÷ 5 = 3. Add the two answers.
Question 3
Which shows a way to find 9 × 21?
- 9 × 2 + 9 × 1
- 9 × 20 × 1
- 9 × 20 + 9 × 1
- 9 × 20 + 1
9 × 20 + 9 × 1
Hint: Split 21 into 20 + 1. Multiply both parts by 9: 9 × 20 = 180 and 9 × 1 = 9. Then add.
Question 4
What is 28 × 7?
28 × 7 = ?
answer box
196
Hint: Split 28 into 20 + 8. Multiply each part by 7: 20 × 7 = 140, 8 × 7 = 56. Then add the parts.
Question 5
A train carries 68 passengers on each trip. How many passengers ride on 7 trips?
🚂answer box
476
Hint: 7 groups of 68 is 68 × 7. Split 68 into 60 + 8. Multiply each part by 7: 60 × 7 = 420, 8 × 7 = 56. Then add the parts.
Question 6
What is 38 ÷ 5?
38 ÷ 5
- 7 R3
- 8 R3
- 7 R4
- 6 R8
7 R3
Hint: 5 × 7 = 35, the closest you can get without going over 38. 38 − 35 = 3 left over, so the remainder is 3.
