Genres and Connections

Myths, legends, historical fiction and more, and connections across cultures and eras.

What your child practices

Your child names genres (myth, legend, folktale, tall tale, historical and science fiction, biography, opinion piece) from their features and connects texts to other texts, cultural perspectives, eras and their own lives.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: 4R9 · recognizing genres and connecting texts to other texts, ideas, cultures, eras and personal experiences

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A myth explains nature. A legend is about a hero, with deeds that grow in the telling.
  2. Historical fiction is set in the past. Science fiction imagines future science.
  3. Connect texts to yourself, other texts, other cultures and the world.

Example: A story about a real hero from long ago grows more amazing with each telling. What genre is it? The hero may have been real. The deeds are stretched as it is retold. Answer: legend
