TEKS student expectation: 5.3(B) · multiplying a three-digit number by a two-digit number with the standard algorithm
Unit 3
Divide
Dividing 2- and 3-digit numbers, finding remainders and deciding what they mean in a story (round up for buses, drop the extra for full bags), and estimating with friendly numbers.
TEKS student expectation: 5.3(C) · dividing a four-digit number by a two-digit number
Unit 4
Unlike Denominators
Adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with different denominators by finding a common denominator, and checking with benchmark fractions.
TEKS student expectation: 5.3(H); 5.3(K) · adding and subtracting fractions with unequal denominators
Unit 5
Prime Factor Trees
Writing whole numbers from 2 to 50 as products of prime factors, for example 24 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3, using factor trees. Prime factorization is a California addition to the 5th grade standards.
TEKS student expectation: 5.4(A) · identifying prime and composite numbers
Unit 6
Expressions & Equations
Writing expressions like n + 5 for “5 more than a number”, evaluating them, solving equations to 100, and finding numbers that make an inequality true.
TEKS student expectation: 5.4(B) · solving multi-step problems with a letter standing for the unknown
Unit 7
Patterns & Equations
Describing growing and shrinking patterns with rules and expressions like 3n + 1, using input–output tables, and solving one-step equations such as n + 37 = 92 or 6 × n = 54.
TEKS student expectation: 5.4(C); 5.4(D) · number patterns from a rule, and additive and multiplicative patterns
Unit 8
Parentheses & Expressions
Evaluating expressions with parentheses and brackets, writing an expression from words, and reading an expression without calculating it.
TEKS student expectation: 5.4(E); 5.4(F) · parentheses and brackets, and simplifying numerical expressions
Unit 9
Volume of Boxes
Finding volume by counting unit cubes and layers, using V = l × w × h, finding a missing side, and adding the volumes of two boxes.
TEKS student expectation: 5.4(G); 5.6(A); 5.6(B) · unit cubes and the volume of rectangular prisms
Unit 10
Area & Perimeter
Finding the area and perimeter of squares and rectangles, working backwards to a missing side, and discovering that shapes with the same area can have different perimeters (and vice versa).
TEKS student expectation: 5.4(H) · solving problems about perimeter and area
Unit 11
Parallel Lines and Quadrilaterals
Finding parallel and perpendicular edges and sides, and sorting quadrilaterals (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, parallelograms and rhombuses) by their sides and angles.
TEKS student expectation: 5.5 · classifying two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy by their attributes
Unit 12
Converting Units
Converting between units in the US customary and metric systems (both ways, including decimals) and using conversions in multi-step problems.
TEKS student expectation: 5.7 · converting measurements within the customary or metric system
Unit 13
Coordinate Grid
Naming and plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid, and reading what a point means in a real situation.
TEKS student expectation: 5.8(A); 5.8(B); 5.8(C) · the coordinate plane and graphing ordered pairs in the first quadrant
Unit 14
Fractions Times & Divided
Your child multiplies a whole number by a fraction, divides a unit fraction (like 1/3) by a whole number, and divides a whole number by a unit fraction, often with recipes and sharing.
TEKS student expectation: 5.3(I); 5.3(J); 5.3(L) · multiplying a whole number and a fraction, and dividing whole numbers and unit fractions
