Fractions Times & Divided

Whole numbers and unit fractions

What your child practices

Your child multiplies a whole number by a fraction, divides a unit fraction (like 1/3) by a whole number, and divides a whole number by a unit fraction, often with recipes and sharing.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 5.3(I); 5.3(J); 5.3(L) · multiplying a whole number and a fraction, and dividing whole numbers and unit fractions

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. To multiply a whole number by a fraction, multiply the whole number by the top, then divide by the bottom.
  2. To divide a unit fraction by a whole number, split it into that many parts: 1/3 ÷ 2 = 1/6.
  3. To divide a whole number by a unit fraction, count how many fit: 4 ÷ 1/3 = 12.

Example: A recipe uses 3/4 cup of milk. How much milk for 4 batches? 4 × 3/4 = 12/4. 12/4 = 3. Answer: 3 cups
