Coordinate Grid

Plot points (x, y)

What your child practices

Naming and plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid, and reading what a point means in a real situation.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 5.8(A); 5.8(B); 5.8(C) · the coordinate plane and graphing ordered pairs in the first quadrant

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A point is written (x, y).
  2. Start at (0, 0). Go right x units, then up y units.
  3. Points on the x-axis have y = 0.

Example: Start at (0, 0). Go 4 right and 2 up. Where are you? x = 4, y = 2. Answer: (4, 2)

Coordinate Grid in Texas
