Circle Graphs
Percents and angles of a whole
What your child practices
Reading and building circle graphs: turning percents into numbers of people and sector angles (out of 360°), and comparing categories.
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 7.6(G) · solving part-to-whole problems with circle graphs
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- A circle graph shows parts of a whole.
- The whole circle is 100% and 360°.
- Find a part's angle by taking that percent of 360°.
Example: A part of a circle graph is 25%. What angle is it? 25% = 0.25. 0.25 × 360° = 90°. Answer: 90°
Circle Graphs in Texas
In the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), this is unit 15 of 22 in 7th grade Math, after Samples & Populations and before Mean, Median & Mode.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
The shaded sector of this circle graph shows the students who chose Cats. What percent is that?
- 25%
- 1%
- 35%
- 75%
25%
Hint: The circle is cut into 4 equal parts and 1 are shaded: 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%.
Question 2
In a circle graph of survey results, the Hockey sector is 40% and stands for 68 students. How many students were surveyed in all?
answer box
170
Hint: 40% of the total is 68, so the total is 68 ÷ 0.4 = 170. Check: 40% of 170 = 68.
Question 3
Why might you choose a circle graph instead of a bar graph?
- To show the order events happened in
- To compare each part with the whole
- To show amounts that don't make up one whole
- To show how something changes over time
To compare each part with the whole
Hint: A circle graph's strength is showing what fraction of the whole each category is.
Question 4
A circle graph shows these survey results. How many of the 60 students chose Mangoes?
Favorite fruit (60 students) Choice Percent Apples 45% Bananas 30% Grapes 10% Mangoes 15% answer box
9
Hint: 15% of 60 = 0.15 × 60 = 9 students.
Question 5
In a circle graph, the "Soccer" sector has an angle of 36°. What percent of the data does that sector show?
- 36%
- 20%
- 90%
- 10%
10%
Hint: Divide by the full turn: 36 ÷ 360 = 0.1 = 10%.
Question 6
In a circle graph, how many degrees is the sector for a category that is 55% of the data?
answer box°
198 °
Hint: A full circle is 360°. 55% of 360° = 0.55 × 360 = 198°.
