Add & Subtract
Bigger numbers to 1000
What your child practices
Adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers by place value, number-line jumps and counting up, plus estimating by rounding to the nearest hundred.
New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-3.NBT.2 · fluently adding and subtracting within 1000
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Line up the ones, tens and hundreds.
- Start with the ones, then tens, then hundreds.
- If a place goes over 9 when adding, regroup to the next place.
Example: 276 + 148 = ? Ones: 6 + 8 = 14. Write 4 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12. Write 2 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4. Answer: 424

Question 5
What is 434 + 59?
434 + 59 = ?
answer box
493
