Numbers to 10,000

Place value, compare and round

What your child practices

Reading, writing and comparing numbers up to 10,000: place value, expanded form, number lines, ordering and rounding.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-3.NBT.4; NY-3.NBT.1 · reading, writing and comparing four-digit numbers with place value and expanded form, and rounding

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. To round, look at the digit just to the right of your place.
  2. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, stay.
  3. Change every digit after your place to 0.

Example: Round 4,763 to the nearest hundred. The hundreds digit is 7. Look at the tens digit: 6. 6 is 5 or more, so round up to 8 hundreds. 4,800. Answer: 4,800
