Scaled Graphs

Each picture stands for more than 1

What your child practices

Reading picture graphs and bar graphs where each picture or step stands for 2, 5 or 10, answering how many more and how many in all, and choosing questions a survey can answer.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-3.MD.3 · drawing and reading scaled picture graphs and bar graphs to answer how-many-more questions

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Read the key: one picture can stand for 2, 5 or 10.
  2. Multiply the pictures by the key.
  3. Subtract to compare two rows.

Example: Each 🌷 stands for 5. Spring has 4 🌷. How many chose spring? 4 × 5 = 20. Answer: 20
