Shapes

Sides, corners and faces

What your child practices

Describing shapes by their sides, corners (vertices) and faces, and spotting 3D shapes in real life.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 2.8(A); 2.8(C) · making shapes with a given number of sides and vertices, and sorting polygons

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. 2D shapes are flat. 3D shapes take up space.
  2. Faces are the flat sides of a 3D shape.
  3. Edges are where faces meet. Vertices are corners.

Example: How many flat faces does a cube have? A cube is like a dice. It has a face on each side: 6. Answer: 6
