Saving & Borrowing

Saving, deposits, borrowing and producers

What your child practices

Personal financial literacy: your child sees how savings grow over time, tells a deposit from a withdrawal, talks about responsible borrowing and lending, and tells producers from consumers, including the cost to make a simple item.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 2.11(A); 2.11(B); 2.11(C); 2.11(D); 2.11(E); 2.11(F) · saving over time, deposits and withdrawals, borrowing and lending, and producers and consumers

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Saving a little each week adds up to a larger amount over time.
  2. A deposit puts money into a bank account. A withdrawal takes money out.
  3. Responsible borrowers pay back what they borrow, on time.

Example: Ava saves $3 every week. How much has she saved after 5 weeks? Add $3 five times: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15. Answer: $15
