My Five Senses

See, hear, smell, taste and touch

What your child practices

Take a sensory walk and name what you see, hear, smell and feel. Sort household objects by how they feel, such as rough and smooth.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: K.6; K.13(B) · observing objects' shape, color, texture and material with the senses

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. We have five senses: see, hear, smell, taste and touch.
  2. Eyes see. Ears hear. Nose smells. Tongue tastes. Skin feels.
  3. Words like soft and rough tell how things feel.

Example: Which sense tells you a drum is loud? You hear a drum with your ears. Ears give us hearing. Answer: hearing

My Five Senses in Texas

In the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), this is unit 5 of 11 in Kindergarten Science, after Weather & Seasons and before Sun & Moon Patterns.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
