What your child practices

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: K.13(A) · the roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits of plants

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Roots drink water. The stem holds the plant up.
  2. Leaves make food from sunlight.
  3. Flowers make seeds. Bees visit flowers.

Example: Which part drinks water from the soil? The soil is under the ground. Roots grow down into it. Answer: roots

Plant Parts at Work in Texas

In the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), this is unit 7 of 11 in Kindergarten Science, after Sun & Moon Patterns and before Where Animals Live.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
